Upshall Family Portraits | Iron Hill Equestrian | Equestrian Family Portraits by Alberta Equestrian Photographer
It was a beautiful fall day at Ironhill Equestrian when I got to capture the lovely Upshall family, complete with their beautiful mare and Labrador, because family portraits just aren’t complete without the whole family! What an adorable family, they made perfect models and we were able to capture stunning portraits that were perfect for hanging in their home. The perfectly coordinated outfits were just the cherry on top of this perfect session. Curious how to coordinate the outfits for your own session? Here are my top tips!
1. Coordinating, not matching
When styling with other people, the instinct can be to try to match your outfits, but really it is about finding complimentary outfits. Matching involves everyone wearing the exact same colours or patterns, and creates a very flat and boring portrait. Coordinating outfits add in different colours, textures, and patterns but they all flow together. It adds dimension for your eye and creates a much more dynamic portrait.
2. Pick a colour palette
Picking a colour palette allows you to find complimentary colours, different tones within the same palette, and add in opposing colours which can add dimension to your outfits. I always assist my clients with picking outfits and especially a colour palette, as it is very season dependent on what will suit your portraits best.
3. Choose a style
All the outfits should be of the same style, for example if one person is wearing a glamorous gown, the other shouldn’t be in jeans and a t-shirt. I like to think of coordinating outfits like designing a house. You wouldn't want every room to look the same, or for one room to stand out from the rest, you want them to fit together cohesively and flow seamlessly from one to the next.
