Kylee & Pia | Calgary | Horse & Rider Portraits by Alberta Equine Photographer

I first met Pia at the end of life session that Kylee booked for her other mare, Jazz. Pia wasn’t the focus that day but a calming presence, watching over us from the other side of the fence. She is a huge black mare, with a commanding presence and wild energy. Even in her senior years, you can tell that she is a force to be reckoned with. It is clear that her and Kylee have found a kindred spirit in each other, learning to be wild and untamed together.

One of my favourite memories of this session was Kylee galloping Jazz at full speed, bareback, and in her dress, with the beautiful sunset in the background. It is the most incredible feeling to have complete trust in your horse and allow yourself that freedom. It was beautiful to witness and capture it.

Unfortunately the images of that moment didn’t make the final selection of Kylee’s 7 favourite images, but they certainly became favourites of mine! I still hope they may end up in an album one day with portraits from both of the sessions that I have captured with Kylee.

“She became my best friend

and once she trusted me she showed such a sweet side of her. She has always kept that wild side to her and

it taught me to let go of the need to control everything,

because I am never fully in control of Pia.”
