I’d like to say I don’t have favourite clients and horses but if I did, Calli and Three (and all her beautiful horses) would certainly be up there on the list! We have had countless sessions together, each one more fun than the last and the effortless communication she shares with her horses is truly beautiful. Add in the fact that she boards at a stunning barn and always seems to luck out with the most beautiful sunsets and you have all the ingredients for the most incredible photos.

Three practically glowed in the golden hour light for these evening horse and rider portraits, with the stunning late summer foliage making the perfect background. Calli’s perfectly styled outfits highlights a couple important things to consider when choosing your outfit for a horse & rider session.

Colour compliment your horse, and the season
Trust me, this bright green colour would not have worked with all horses! Pair it with a black or grey and it would be far too eye catching, against a palomino or liver chestnut it would clash entirely, even against a different shade of bay. But because Three is such a rich and vibrant bay, practically shining like a copper penny, the equally bright and vibrant green is able to compliment without competing for attention and highlights instead of distracts.
Accessorize
With such a bold outfit, the simple and understated accessories are perfect. They add just enough dimension and depth to make the outfit interesting, while not clashing with the outfit or seeming out of place.
Creating a “look”
While the dress itself is quite glamorous and eye catching, the use of dainty accessories, understated shoes, and simple hair and makeup allow this to become a stylized look that doesn’t feel out of place at the barn but rather right at home. The look perfectly captures Calli’s down to earth personality, which was exactly the goal for her grad photos this evening.
